Wales, Atlantic Slavery And Libraries – What To Look For And How To Interpret It

Wales, Atlantic Slavery And Libraries – What To Look For And How To Interpret It

Until recently Wales’s role in Atlantic slavery was thought to be peripheral but new research has revealed much that connects the country to this appalling part of British history. With the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement and our growing awareness of racism in the UK, there has never been a better time to understand this difficult subject.

This workshop will look at how we can use our libraries and archives to find Wales’s links to slavery. Whether you are interested in just a general overview or want to learn about a specific part of this story in depth, this session will explore a wide range of resources and discuss how to use them.

Dr Marian Gwyn has been researching the history of the Atlantic slave trade and its connections to Wales for over thirty years. She is Head of Heritage for Race Council Cymru and has recently sat on the Welsh Government’s working groups for the Audit of Statues and Memorials in Wales Connected to Slavery and Empire and the Recommendations for Embedding the Themes and Experiences of Minority Communities into the National Curriculum for Wales.
