Marcus Foster
Marcus Albert Foster was best known for serving as the principal of Simon Gratz High School in Philadelphia USA, and being the first black superintendent of a large school district.

Marcus Foster, born 31 March 1923 in Athens,Georgia. Foster attended South Philadelphia High School and gained skills and experience in his youth that helped shape his future career. These included his foster mother stressing the importance of syntax, to his membership in a neighbourhood men’s group which gave him the experience that he `could hold his hands up’. In 1947 Foster graduated from Cheyney State College and went on to earn his Doctor of Education from the University of Pennsylvania.
Between 1957 and 1970 Foster taught in Philadelphia public schools, and served as the principal of Dunbar Elementary School, OV Catto School for Boys and Gratz High School. In addition he served as the Associate Superintendent for Community Relations and moved back to Oakland in 1970, after being appointed Superintendent of Oakland Public Schools.
