Roselyn Payne Epps grew up on the campus of Savannah State College in Georgia. Her parents were both educators and she attended Howard University in Washington DC studying zoology and chemistry. Roselyn Payne Epps was a lifelong advocate for women, minorities and the undeserved.
In 1974 Roselyn Epps became the first African American local President of the American Medical Women’s Association and in 1988 she became the first African American and first woman to become President of the Washington DC chapter of the American Academy of Paediatrics. From 1984 to1989 Roselyn Epps was Acting Chief of Child Development Division and Director of the Child Development Centre at Howard University. She worked on a project to help identify children with learning disabilities and to assist them, their schools, and their parents. In 1991 Roselyn Epps was the first African American elected national President of the American Medical Women’s Association and in 1992 was the first African American female President of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia. From the period of 1995-1989 she worked as a scientific programme administrator at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health (USA).
Roselyn was married to Charles Eppsan orthopaedic surgeon and Dean of Howard University’s College of Medicine. They had three children.
