Rebecca Lee Crumpler was the first Black woman to earn a medical degree in the United States. She battled deep seated prejudice against women and African Americans in medicine

Rebecca was the only child of Absolum Davis and Matilda Webber. Her childhood was spent in Pennsylvania and she attended New England Female Medical College.

Rebecca Lee Crumpler was the first Black woman to earn a medical degree, in 1864. In the early 1850s she had moved to Massachusetts and became a nurse. The doctors she worked with recognised her talent and sent letters of recommendation to the New England Female Medical College. In 1883 she published her Book of Medical Discourses which guided women about care for themselves and their children.

Rebecca married in 1852 but was widowed in 1863. She remarried in 1865 to Arthur Crumpler and in 1870 they had a daughter, Lizzie Sinclair Crumpler.
