Black History Month is a great opportunity to celebrate the contributions of people of African descent as part of our shared history and heritage here in Wales.

Wales has one of the UK’s oldest multi-ethnic communities in Cardiff, in the area of Tiger Bay. In our shared history, Wales has attracted people of African descent from across the world to work in our shipping and mining industries. This this has been an important part of our history and has enriched our culture and economy.

As First Minister, I am committed to ensuring and promoting the elimination of discrimination, harassment and victimisation in our communities and in employment. I strongly believe we must continue to build a strong and diverse society where people of every race, faith and colour are valued for their character and for what they do for their families, friends and neighbours.

In Wales, we value the diversity of our communities and this is what makes us such a vibrant and tolerant nation. I am therefore delighted to give my wholehearted support to Race Council Cymru and other organisations who promote the many achievements of BME people in our communities across Wales especially at this special time.
