Chantelle Haughton
Chantelle regenerated a strip of ancient Welsh Woodland and imagined the Outdoor Learning Centre on Campus working with students, colleagues and was instrumental in gaining funding from charitable trusts to develop the site. Chantelle works through regeneration and a place responsive pedagogy, actively nurturing a sense of communitas, cynefin, social justice and civic mission within our university campus which branches city wide into use of other spaces. Community is core to Chantelle’s work with our students and partners ensuring diversity. Chantelle is also Vice Chair for BAME Ed Network Wales, Deputy Chair for the Early Years Network Wales and Deputy Chair for the Advance HE Race Equality Working Group at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Chantelle was recently in The Working Group with Prof Charlotte Williams responsible for the Welsh Government report published in March 2021 on ‘Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Communities Contributions and Cynefin in the New Curriculum Report’. Also a member of the Welsh Government pan-Wales steering groups undertaking critical review on play in Wales. Within the Cardiff School of Education and Social Policy, she has worked with colleagues to establish anti-racism awareness training for all staff with the organisation Show Racism the Red Card Wales. Historically, Chantelle learnt and worked life-long with My Betty Campbell (Wales’ first black head teacher and honorary Fellow of Cardiff Metropolitan University). Chantelle was a childhood pupil immersed in Betty’s pioneering curriculum including Black History the 70s and 80s, Chantelle continued to work in community projects alongside Betty for many years and continues advocating Betty’s vision for diversity, inclusion and racial literacy in the curriculum and the education workforce of Wales. Chantelle worked as Principal Investigator with Dr Susan Davis to co-lead a research team in a Welsh Government funded research project to explore the lack of diversity in the recruitment and retention in teaching and career progression experiences for teachers from minority ethnic backgrounds in the Education Workforce in Wales (2021). Chantelle’s own diverse heritage and family mix, lived and professional experience mean that she has a sincere and robust knowledge and care for the current and developing policy and in practice context. Chantelle was awarded Student Led Teaching Fellowship Award (2013), Vice Chancellor’s Staff Award for Excellence (2011), HEA CATE finalist (2017).
